New Law on Consumer Protection

On June 10, 2023, the Verkhovna Rada adopted the Law on Consumer Protection, aimed at aligning national legislation with European standards and harmonizing the consumer protection system in Ukraine with the principles, approaches, and practices of the EU.

The enacted law will enable:

• Implementation of domestic legislation on consumer protection in accordance with EU directives and regulations.
• Expansion of the scope of the Law to include the field of food production concerning consumer economic rights.
• Definition of rights and obligations of consumers in the sphere of e-commerce.
• Creation of a Unified State Web Portal for consumers in the field of e-commerce.
• Specification of the information that product and business entities must provide during electronic commerce, as well as establishment of liability for the absence of such information.
• Imposition of responsibility on business entities that provide services of a trading electronic platform (marketplace) for the placement of goods for sale by other business entities.

Furthermore, the State Consumer Protection Service has been granted the authority to request an internet service provider to restrict access to websites (or their sections, software) of business entities engaged in unfair business practices and violating consumer protection laws and other relevant regulations.
